Refill Guide

Choosing the correct refill for your pen is important, but sometimes it hard to know which is right. Some brands have specific sizes and profiles to fit their pens, some take standard sizes, some brands even do refills designed for other brands. House of pens have come up with this easy to use refill guide to help you navigate your way through the many options available.

Generally if you want a refill for your pen look for a branded refill that matches your pen and type. If you can't find a branded refill this is usually because the manufacturer does not make specialised refills and your pen will take the International Standard for that writing type.

Caran d'Ache Ballpoint Refill

Goliath Length
Caran D'ache ballpoint pens take a super-sized refill, with an extra-long writing life, called the Goliath.

CROSS

Cross Ballpoint Refill

Cross Length
Cross ballpoint refills are brand specific and screw into place within the ballpoint. This screw fixing means the ballpoint mechanism can work without the need for a loose internal spring so there will be no worries about losing part of your pen when changing refills.

Parker use two types of ink cartridge. Both are compatible with all Parker fountain pens. The only difference being the size and thereby the amount of ink they hold and how long they will last before needing to be changed.
Parker ink cartridges use 'Quink' ink technology which utilises alcohol in the ink instead of water, creating a very quick drying and smudge resistant ink.
Parker Quink Short Cartridges are the International Standard Short ink cartridge size.

Sheaffer Length
Sheaffer make their own brand specific refills which fit most Sheaffer ballpoint pens, but the Taranis and the Sagaris ranges take the International Standard ballpoint refill size. Sheaffer brand refills are available in fine and medium writing points. Colour choice is limited to black or blue.

Sheaffer have two styles of rollerball refill. Classic and Slim. The Slim style is Standard International Euro format.

The Yard-o-Led Standard ballpoint refill will fit Diplomat, Deco, Deluxe, Perfecta, Regent and Viceroy ranges.
Pocket size Yard-o-Led ballpoint pens need Standard International multifunction size refills.

Standard International Ballpoint

Standard Ballpoint Length
Compatible with Coles, Conklin, Diplomat, Faber-Castell, Graf von Faber-Castell, Hugo Boss, Kaweco, Laban, Lexon, Montegrappa, Ohto, Online, Otto Hutt, Parker, Pelikan, some Sheaffer ranges, USUS and Visconti. Known as the 'G2' within the pen industry this is the Industry standard size. It is more commonly known as the 'Parker-Style' ballpoint refill.

Medium Point Refills

Medium writing point refills are the standard for this type and most pens will be fitted with this writing point width at purchase. The writing point is usually 1mm wide, but varies from manufacturer to manufacturer. Being the most standard size means there are many options of manufacturers to choose from for your refills.

Fine Point Refills

Fine point refills are great for those with smaller handwriting or for intricate detailing. They are usually 0.8mm in width. If you want to go even finer, choose a needlepoint, at 0.7mm in width.

Broad Point Refills

Broad writing point refills are fantastic if you have larger handwriting and don't like spider webs across your page. Options on this width are limited though. Usually a 1.2mm writing point.

Gel Ink Refills

Gel ink refills are fantastic for bright vibrant colours, and smooth steady writing lines, but this does come at the cost of the refills life. Gel ink refills won't last as long as standard ballpoint refills.

Euro-format Rollerball Refills

International Roller Length

Compatible with Caran d'Ache, Coles, Diplomat, Faber-Castell, Graf von Faber-Castell, Hugo Boss, Kaweco (certain ranges), Laban, Montegrappa, Ohto, Online, Otto Hutt, Pelikan, Platinum, Sheaffer, Visconti, Waterman, Worther and Yard-o-Led.

The Euro-format rollerball refill is similar to a standard in that a lot of brands use a euro-format. The only issue is that although very similar and most can be used across the different brands they vary slightly. Some have a wider tip. Some have a small 'step' where the tip section meets the barrel.

All this means that if you have a pen which suits Euro-format rollerball refills it is best to use the manufacturer's own refills. That said if you're feeling risky there's plenty of options to choose from which will most likely fit.

Standard Multifunction Ballpoint Refill

Multi Length

Compatible with Caran d'Ache, Cross, Laban, Lamy, Ohto, Online, Parker, Platinum, Worther, Yard-o-Led.

Known as the 'D1' within the pen industry, this is the industry standard size for multi-function and pocket pens. These refills are usually made of metal and have a hollow end. Generally these are miniaturised ballpoint refills, utilising oil based ink.

As lots of brands manufacture their own there is a wide range to choose from and even some great colours and styles; like the Lamy M55 Marker Refill, which works like a highlighter.

Many multi-function refills have a fine writing point as they have limited ink capacity and this prolongs the refill life, but other sizes are available.

    First off I would like to say fantastic blog! I had a quick question in which I’d like to ask if you do not
    mind. I was curious to find out how you center yourself and clear your mind before writing.
    I have had a difficult time clearing my mind in getting my ideas out.

    I truly do enjoy writing however it just seems like the first
    10 to 15 minutes are wasted just trying to figure out how to begin. Any recommendations or tips?
